Progression Case Study — SOC Triage for a High-Alert-Volume Manufacturing Site
Case Study

Building a fast legitimate-vs-malicious triage rhythm for a high-alert-volume manufacturing site

How Progression's SOC helped a leading auto-components manufacturing site cut through a month of high alert volume, isolating one genuine threat and closing every case with a documented, auditable answer.

The Challenge

The highest case volume in the group, with real threats at risk of being buried

The site generated the highest case volume of any location in the group, with 215 incidents detected and 41 cases raised in a single month. With much of this activity eventually confirmed as ordinary business operations, the real risk was alert fatigue burying the small number of genuine threats.

  • ! Alerts spanned brute-force login attempts and a firewall account under brute-force attack.
  • ! Executable files were being posted to an internal virtual host.
  • ! Large outbound transfers were observed from several servers.
  • ! Much of this activity was eventually confirmed as ordinary business operations, making genuine threats hard to spot.
  • ! The real risk was alert fatigue burying the small number of genuine threats.
The Solution

Joint triage with the customer's IT team, case by case

Progression's SOC worked directly with the customer's IT team to triage every case raised during the month, giving the site a clear line between routine noise and real risk without slowing day-to-day operations.

  • ✓ 24/7 SOC monitoring of 18 integrated assets across Windows, Linux, firewall and cloud environments.
  • ✓ Joint triage of all 41 cases with the site's team to separate expected operational patterns from activity needing action.
  • ✓ Confirmation of a genuine malware-IP contact and recommendation for immediate blocking.
  • ✓ Validation of software changes, service-account login failures and scanning activity as legitimate behaviour.
  • ✓ Review of excessive denied connections from outside India, confirming they were already blocked at the firewall.
The Outcome

A high-noise month, turned into a clear, auditable outcome

The engagement turned a high-noise month into a clear, auditable security outcome for the site.

One real threat isolated

One confirmed malicious IP identified and blocked out of the full case volume.

41 of 41 cases closed

All cases closed, with the remaining 40 resolved as verified legitimate activity.

Auditable answer for every alert

A documented, auditable answer for every alert raised during the month.

Perimeter controls validated

Existing perimeter controls validated, with foreign denied connections confirmed as already blocked.

Repeatable triage rhythm

A repeatable SOC finding to customer confirmation rhythm for future high-volume months.

Drowning in alerts, unsure which ones matter?
