At the HP Converged System event co-hosted by HP and Progression, we had the privilege of listening to an enlightening session by Mr Swastik Chakraborty, Ex-ISRO Scientist and key contributor in the Chandrayaan Mission. Current working as a Datacenter Architect, Mr Chakraborty talked about digital economy, evolution of data centers over time, Software Defined Infrastructure, and how HP Converged Systems are capable of meeting the customer and market needs.
He started off with some startling facts: 40ZB of data will be stored worldwide by 2020! But going by the current trends, about 80% of the data is unprotected! With that Mr Chakraborty caught everybody’s attention. Security and privacy remain key challenges, with the ever growing trends in commerce, connectivity and collaboration models, aided by device proliferation.
Business users still carry a perception of IT that it is limited in choice, slow in delivery and inflexible as company needs change. So the onus lies on technology providers to give them options which cater to their needs, and keep them in sync with the evolving digital economy. The journey to this New Style of IT begins with the data center, he said.
The need of the hour is to replace traditional IT that is siloed, complex and expensive with efficient data centers which provide speed, simplicity, and efficiency. Swastik then discussed the steps in moving towards these modern data centers.Converge – It all starts with the infrastructure. Servers, storage, and networking are the three pillars which form the foundation for a Software Defined Infrastructure (SDI).
- Converge: It all starts with the infrastructure. Servers, storage, and networking are the three pillars which form the foundation for a Software Defined Infrastructure (SDI).
- Software Defined: Mr Chakraborty talked about SDI being the workload or application-driven orchestration and control of all aspects of the data center, from infrastructure to operations and management. SDI is open and uses hardware-independent management and virtualization software, and is delivered as a service.
- On-demand IT: HP Software Defined Infrastructure moves beyond infrastructure to applications and is an answer to On-demand IT.
He also spoke about four transformation areas that will define the New Style of Business:
- Transforming to an on-demand IT infrastructure
- Protecting your digital assets
- Enabling the most productive workplace
